The European Union Commission has declared 2021 the “Year of Rail”. As a part of the “Smart Mobility Strategy” the EU Green Deal calls for a substantial shift to rail, aiming at 50% rail freight increase by 2030 and 100% increase by 2050.
It makes perfect sense as the rail freight can achieve climate neutrality without the need for any additional infrastructure. At the same time, it produces 16 times less carbon pollution than road transport and is much more efficient in terms of space and productivity – with a single freight equivalent to the volume carried by 150 semi-trailer trucks.

SURA® WHEELS FOR A SURELY SAFE RIDE
Thermostable (i.e. “low-stress”) wheels designed to limit deformations and internal stresses caused by thermal loads during tread braking.
ANTI BALLAST AXLE PROTECTION
A patented anti-impact high shell, called Lurshell® is mounted on wheelsets to protect the axle against corrosion, while a special coating system, called Lursak®, guarantees total protection of the axle against corrosion and damage from ballast impact.
INCREASED LIFETIME OF THE AXLES
Cold rolling is proven to extend lifetime of railway axles by increasing the fatigue limit by up to 25%, inhibiting the defects’ propagation and significantly slowing down the appearance of the corrosion.
SYOPE® QUIETER TRACKS
Lucchini RS offers the widest range of noise-reduction solutions for the train wheels. Syope® solutions are designed to significantly reduce wheel noise emissions, thereby limiting the impact of noise pollution on people and ecosystems..
SPECIFIC KNOW-HOW FOR AAR-BASED APPLICATIONS
Lucchini RS Design Department is qualified by AAR for wheel design according toS-660 and S-669 standards. Specific AAR-based metallurgical solutions are available to improve the service performance even in the most severe environmental conditions.

Smartset® sensors detect the stress levels of the axle, offering a real-time picture of the wheelset safety and warning of the potential critical locations along the track.
Powered by Starcrack algorithm, the sensor monitors wheelset load spectra and estimates the optimal service NDT inspection intervals.
