Structural Tests on Solid or Resilient Wheels

Wheels are designed by theoretical Finite Element Models (FEM); an essential part of the design criteria is the experimental validation of the structure mechanical calculation results.
BSD test rig was developped to apply the radial and lateral loads to the wheel reproducing the model used for the wheel design. The wheel is normally instrumented with strain gauges in the critical points of the wheel geometry in order to correlate the stresses to the load conditions.
The same test rig is also used to perform type tests on resilient wheel to evaluate the radial, lateral and torsional stiffness. To obtain a more comprehensive characterization of the wheel, the test rig is equipped with an electric motor that provides rotation to the wheel while applying the loads to the rim. This is of particular interest for evaluating the wheel stiffness in rolling conditions.
